Gaillardia
'Fanfare'
I must admit we aren't to crazy about Gaillardias here at the nursery (due to the fact that the centers dissappear every few years and the outer plantlets neat to be replanted) Having said that, there have been some nice color advancements in the species and Fanfare continues that with a dynamic combination of yellow and scarlet. But it is the individual upward facing trumpet shaped flowers with tips that curve outward that really sets this plant apart. Look for this to be the "hot" color impulse buy this season.

Pale orange (almost apricot or peach) flowers are ever so slightly tinged with pale yellow tips on a plant that is more upright than the spreading forms of old. False sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers and they can really carry a border in mid to late summer. So why aren't they more widely used? Mostly because gardener's aren't in the nurseries during their bloom period to experience them. Summer Nights continues a nice breeding trend with deep golden flowers and mahogony centers.
