Salix matsudana 'Scarlet Curls'
Zones 5 to 8Description: Pictured here as a young plant, 'Scarlet Curls' will eventually become a tree 30 feet high and about 15 feet wide with twisted twigs, wavy branches and even wavy-edged leaves. Not the least of its charms are the shadows the bare branches throw against the snow, and the bright red color in the young growth is nothing short of fabulous for winter decoration. The cultivar 'Golden Curls' has orange-yellow stems and the same growth habit. Like all willows, these trees grow vigorously in temperate climates and cool soil.
Requirements: While willows prefer moisture, they are tough and adaptable. The only soil that does not suit them is alkaline soil. Like most species of Salix, the branches of the curly willow are susceptible to ice damage.
