Cornus sericea
Zones 2 to 8
Description: A tough native plant with great cold tolerance and outstanding winter color in its upright stems. Cornus Seicea 'Cardinal' has gorgeous dark red bark, while Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' boasts bright chartreuse bark. Planted together, they make an eye-catching addition to the winter picture. As the colors are most vivid in young growth, cut the older stems down to the ground every few years. Performs best north of Zone 8.
Requirements: Another easy plant with no curious whims, this dogwood species can grown in almost any soil. It will even tolerate swampy conditions and in the wild, is often found along streams and in wet meadows. It can be easily propogated by separating a few of the suckers that develop at the base of the plant and replanting them.
