Acer palmatum var. dissectum
'Atropurpureum'
Zones 5 - 8
Description: Beautiful as tracery against the snow or supporting ridges of snow, this is a handsome plant for winter structure. Domed habie, zigzag trunks, and ground-sweeping branches make it a valuable landscape plant. Grows slowly to 10 feet in height, wider in spead. In spring, the delicate, feathery leaves are a rich red, turning green in summer and red again in the fall. Grows well as far south as Georgia, but loses its red foliage color earlier in the season.
Requirements: This long-lived tree benefits from moist, well-drained soil and protection from hot, dry winds. Although it likes lots of sun, it does best with some shade during the hottest part of the day.
