Leucothoe fontanesiana
Zones 4 to 8Description: A low, mound-forming broadleaf evergreen with glittering, mahogany-red winter foliage. The cultivar 'Lovita' adds color harmonies to the snowy landscape. The rich hue of its leaves persists. until spring when new growth emerges, echoing the warm red color. Greening up during the summer, the foliage partially hides the white spring flowers, which are of secondary importance. Drooping leucothoe is grown chiefly for its magnificent leaves.
Requirements: Although native to the southeast, this species resents the heat and drought, and grows best in shade. Its soil requirements are similar to those fo rhododendron - acid, humus-rich soil that retain moisture. Unlike rhododendron, it is deer-proof.
