Pinus densiflora 'Oculus-draconis'
Zones 3 - 7
Description: An unusual and elegant ornament for the winter hardscape, the dragon's eye pine has rather stiff needles with broadly alternating yellow and green bands. This slow-growing tree spreads open with age, and becomes irregular in outline with the handsome variegated foliage carried in layers at the ends of the branches. At any age, its needles command attention and enliven the winter landscape. Older specimens become increasingly picturesque in silhouette and develop beautiful scaly orange bark.
Requirements: Find a prominent place in full sun for this magnificent tree and give it moist, well-drained, slightly acid soil. Although pines are tolerant of poor, thin soils, they grow much more luxuriantly, and quickly, given good garden soil.
