New Trees Need Water And Close Monitoring
Most newly planted trees need an inch of water a week during the first growing season to help the root system develop. When rainfall is insufficient, I give new trees supplemental water. To avoid overwatering, I feel the top of the
root ball. If it's moist, I don't water. If it's dry, I fill up the watering well.
I never fertilize trees until the spring following their planting date. The composted cow manure adds enough nutrients to get them started, and extra fertilizing will encourage leafy growth at a time when root development is more important. Overall, I find that keeping a young tree a little hungry encourages its roots to wander, making it stronger in the long run.
I think of planting a tree as investing in something I can enjoy for a lifetime. That's why I do everything I can to give each tree the best-possible start.
