December

Chamaecyparis obtusa --- 'Crippsii'

Chamaecyparis obtusa  ---  'Crippsii'

A loosely conical tree with exceptional, bright golden yellow foliage. One of the best of the yellow conifers. Full sun for best color.
Zone 6

Chamaecyparis (known as false cypress) is a large genus of plants with many interesting and exciting cultivars available. They grow best in a moist, well drained soil in a sunny location with C. obtusa tolerating some shade. A cool humid planting area protected from drying winds is the best location. Chamaecyparis are generally pyramidal or columnar with pendulous branches at the tips. They can be soft or stiff in texture with colors ranging from light green, blue green and deep dark green to many shades of yellow or gold. This wide variety makes them a valuable addition to the landscape. They can be used as specimen plants or as accents in a border planting.

Companion Plants

These plants will complement this month's featured plant very nicely and make excellent companions in the mixed border or landscape.

llex verticillata 'Winter Red'
Winterberry

llex verticillata 'Winter Red'A superior cultivar, with lustrous dark green foliage that becomes bronzed in fall and abundant bright red berries that persist long into the winter. Every landscape should have at least one! (Pollinator: 'Late Male'.)
Zone 4

Malus 'Mary Potter'
Crabapple

Malus 'Mary Potter'A dense, mounded, spreading and low branched tree, growing 10-15' high and 15-20' wide. Flower buds are pink, opening white with red fruit in the autumn. A fine plant, origination at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston.
Zone 4

Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurescens'
Flame Grass

Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurescens'Reddish foliage turns deeper red in late summer. An early bloomer for us, it grows only to about 4' while getting 6' wide. Grasses look best while backlit by the afternoon sun and M. purpurescens is no exception.
Zone 5

Pinus parviflora glauca
Japanese White Pine

Pinus parviflora glaucaA small to medium sized tree, conical when young and becoming flat-topped. Blue-green needles are slightly twisted. A very picturesque tree, frequently used for bonsai and in Japanese gardens. Exceptionally heavy cone-bearing form.
